Science can be used to solve even the most mysterious of crimes! The children become forensic scientists and attempt to unravel and solve a crime, using scientific tools and analysis. Given only the slightest clues, these science detectives must determine where Gizmo’s friend, Dr. Shelby, has been taken. After saving Dr. Shelby, the children use their science tools to identify the crime culprit, from a list of several possible suspects.
Star Chart Sleuths – How can astronomy help solve a crime? The children are introduced to the science of forensics and learn the details of the mysterious disappearance of Dr. Shelby. After learning how to tell position and direction with the glittering constellations in the sky, the children find their first clue from Dr. Shelby, a note in the bottle! The children build star wheels and begin narrowing down the location of the missing doctor!
Microscope Mystery – Microscopes refract light to produce a magnified view of tiny worlds, and those tiny worlds may hold the key to solving the next clue! The children learn the properties of light, including reflection and refraction. The children then build microscopes and explore how light bends as it travels through a lens to produce magnified images. The children then use their new microscopes to examine the tiniest of clues and uncover a wealth of information.
Acid Evidence – Could water be a clue? The children learn the difference between acids and bases, and are introduced to chemical indicators. The children then learn how acids and bases are used in chemical reactions and apply their knowledge to solve Dr. Shelby’s next clue. The Children then get a set of Spy Pens, secret writers that use and acid and a base for writing invisible messages.
Fingerprint Finale – Whodunnit? After weeks of investigation, the children have finally found the location where Dr. Shelby had been taken. To begin to find Dr. Shelby’s abductor, the children are introduced to the basics of dermatoglyphics. The children discover the science of fingerprinting, and use it to finally identify the culprit in the abduction of Dr. Shelby!
Chromatography Caper – Phew, Dr. Shelby is finally safe, but the criminal’s plans are still afoot. The children are introduced to chromatography and use it to decipher inky evidence left on a letter at the crime scene. The children work together to uncover the last of the mystery, find a secret accomplice to the crime, and close the case on the scheme, once and for all!
