Physical science is the study of the properties and structures of matter, space and time. This section introduces major concepts in physics, as well as exploring special areas like special relativity and forensics.
MAGNETIC BUMPER CARS – 1 hour, sets of 12, $6/student
The children discover the force of magnetism by doing experiments that demonstrate attraction, repulsion, and how compasses use Earth’s magnetic field to point north. Students use bar magnets to make a simple compass and build a K’nex bumper car that is propelled by magnetism.
GLIDERS – 1 hour, sets of 12, $6/student
The children will learn about the four forces that affect the flight of a glider: lift, weight, thrust, and drag. They will construct a scientific model of a glider and use the aviation alphabet to give it a name. Then they will investigate how the addition of a rudder, elevators, and ailerons affect the flight of their glider.
BUBBLEOLOGY – 1 hour, sets of 12, $6/student
Giant bubbles will be created to demonstrate the skin of water, which is caused by surface tension. The children will learn more about surface tension by seeing how many drops of water they can put on a penny. Then they will explore the properties of bubbles by conducting several experiments using Bubble Goop, made by adding soap to water to make the skin of water more flexible.
STATIC AND CURRENT ELECTRICITY – 1 hour, sets of 12, $6/student
The children will be introduced to the parts of the atom as they discover the science behind how electricity works. The focus of Part I is static electricity. The children will use static electricity to do two “magic” tricks. The focus of Part II is current electricity. The children will create a simple electrical circuit that lights up a light bulb. Group investigations will include experiments with series and parallel circuits using multiple batteries. Then the children will build their own simple flashlight to demonstrate open and closed circuits and to test for conductors and insulators.
