Children explore how telescopes work by experimenting with lenses, light, and refraction. Then they apply what they have learned about telescopes to construct telescopes of their own.

Children learn about four of Earth’s biomes—deserts, rain forests, oceans, and tundras—by building rotating dioramas. Children also discover that the plants and animals that live in these extreme biomes have adaptations that enable them to survive.

Children learn that Earth's surface layer is broken into tectonic plates and create graham-cracker models of the three different types of plates—convergent, divergent, and transform. Children also build magnetic plate-tectonics puzzles that show how Earth's plates have moved over time.

Children investigate the power of air, including how wind forms, and make small wind tunnels that create spinning rings of air.

130023 Volcanoes

Children discover how volcanoes form and learn the parts of volcanoes as they create “volcanic artwork” complete with volcanic (igneous) rock samples.

Children become junior meteorologists by building weather stations, taking different types of measurements, and making observations about the weather.

In this lesson the children learn about fingerprints, take their own fingerprints, and analyze a fingerprint found at the crime scene to solve the mystery.

In this lesson the children learn about “the science of ice cream” and celebrate solving the case of the missing ice-cream recipe by using the recipe to make ice cream.

In this lesson, the children make a hieroglyphic decoder wheel to help them solve the first clue and put Gizmo on the path to treasure.

130075 Acids and Bases

The children learn about acids and bases as they solve the next clue in the search for the pharaoh’s treasure. They use a universal indicator to test pretend water samples from along the Nile River and discover where the river is acidic.

130076 Secrets of the Sand

The children use loupes and perform a chemical test to explore the differences between abiogenic and biogenic sand. Then they test sand samples to help Gizmo determine which canyon will help lead him to the pharaoh’s treasure.

130077 A Star Will Rise

The children learn about stars and constellations, including why they appear to move across the sky. The children also build star wheels to help them predict which mountain the star Sirius will rise behind, so Gizmo will know which mountain contains the treasure.

The children learn what Gizmo discovered in Pharaoh Gizmotep’s tomb and have fun examining the items Gizmo sent them from the tomb to thank them for their help solving The Mystery of the Pharaoh’s Treasure.
