Summer Adventures is organized into 12 one-week themes. The themes for summer day camp are:
Wilderness 101 - Children will explore the wilderness—without even leaving the classroom! They will learn about different outdoor activities, such as camping, hiking, and cooking on a campfire. Children will also examine animal tracks, listen to wilderness sounds, and make bird feeders for their feathered friends.
Dig Ancient Egypt - Pyramids, mummies, and pharaohs are just a few of the wonders of ancient Egypt. During this unit children will learn about the customs of ancient Egypt, as well as the musical instruments played by the children of ancient Egypt, and the foods eaten by Egyptian children long ago.
Surf’s Up! - Children will travel to imaginary beaches as they build sandcastles and look for seashells, learn about waves, practice their balancing skills by pretending to surf, and celebrate their learning at a fun beach party on the final day of the unit. It’s time to catch a wave!
Everyday Heroes - Children will discover that heroes live in their homes and communities. They will learn that real heroes don’t need capes or secret identities as they learn about and discuss the qualities of heroes.
Splish, Splash! - Whether a child is a swimmer, sailor, or builder of sandcastles, there is nothing more fun than playing with water. As children set out to have fun with water, they will begin by exploring water and how water can change the size, texture, and strength of everyday objects. They will also learn about all of the many places water is found, and be reminded how to play safely around water, such as around lakes, rivers, and swimming pools. Get ready to dive in!
Gross and Gooey Science - During this “yucky” unit, children will explore a special kind of science – gross and gooey science—through fun, hands-on activities such as Making Mucus, Super Saliva, and Guess the Goo. While discussing the “gross and gooey” science that happens in our bodies, children will expand their vocabularies by learning the scientific terms for words such as burp and throw up.
Spectacular Sports - Children will explore several different sports, such as bowling, soccer, basketball, and tee ball. They will learn basic skills associated with those sports through activities and group discussions. Children will also learn the importance of being good sports and supporting others.
Animal Antics - Children will learn all about animals and their homes. Not only will they learn about animals in their own neighborhoods, but they will explore animals that live in areas faraway. Animal Antics gives children opportunities to explore the habitats of animals, what animals eat, and how they move.
Science Adventures™ - Children will learn about how astronauts move on the moon and why we can live on earth, but not on other planets. They will expand their understanding of the moon as they explore craters in the moon, create their own space shuttles, and play in alien slime!
Art Expo - Children will learn about and create their own mosaics from a variety of materials such as paper shapes, beans, seeds, pasta, and buttons. They will explore basic artistic concepts involving shape, line, color, and space.
Kids’ Kitchen - During Kids’ Kitchen, children will learn about fruit and what makes fruits different from vegetables. They will sample different types of fruit, including some often thought of as vegetables, as they prepare recipes for muffins, jam, and salsa.
Wild, Wild West - As children set out to learn about the Wild, Wild West, they will explore covered wagons and wagon trains, and will learn about recreational activities of the Old West, such as creating shadow puppets, singing campfire songs, and dancing western-style dances. They will also explore panning for gold, milking cows, and lassoing cattle.
